Wardrobe Planning-Cathy's White Shirt

We all need at least one great white shirt in our closet.

This month I made another shirt using my TNT shirt pattern, Butterick 5526. I have made view D at least four times.  The princess seams create a feminine silhouette as well as provide plenty of fitting opportunities. 

I used the white cotton sateen shirting that Roz sells. This is a beautiful fabric, light weight, easy to sew, with a subtle sateen sheen that bumps a basic shirt up a notch on the elegant scale.

My collar construction differs from the traditional collar presented in the pattern guide sheet.

Threads magazine (number 166), had an article by Louise Cutting, “A Better Collar,” that teaches you how to make a one-piece collar. After seeing what a beautiful, bulk-free, collar this method produces, I use it whenever possible. I’m still working on perfecting collar points but this method has helped me improve.

This collar technique works well for those who like to wear their collars standing up. The way the collar pattern piece is shaped puts the undercollar on the bias which helps hold up the collar.

What I like most about a white shirt is its versatility. It can be worn casually with jeans to the grocery store........ 

dressed up a bit for more festive occasions....... 

and even worn when a more serious vibe is needed.
